Google Search

In this activity we learned how to search pages easier and faster by by using Google Advance Search. We could find the exact page with specific words and unwanted words. There was two tools that allows us to find pages similar to the page and find pages that link to the page. We learned how to trim the URL back to find the real page. After this activity we know that Google Avanced Search is very helpful because it can make searches faster and more specific.

Four Nets For Better Searching notes (Khang & Yen)

1/ Start narrow

Atlantis : 39,400,000 hits

Atlantis continent : 71.000 hits

Vermont VT : 91,900 hits

Strategy: typing in unwanted words and specific words.

2/ Find the exact phase

San Diego Stare University : 5,230,000 hits

San Diego State University (exact wording or phase): 1,420,000 hits

Bill 602P (exact wording or phase) : 6030 hits

We know he has weapons of mass destruction (exact wording or phase) : 770 hits

demonstrating genuine leadership (exact wording or phase) ; 750 hits

3/ Trim back the URL:

First, we went to the site http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wmi/wq/collin/index.html But it turned out to be the wrong URL…

We trimmed the URL : http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us/wmi/, and we saw the Middle School, Elementary School.

We trimmed the URL : http://www.longwood.k12.ny.us, and we got into the homepage (Longwood Central School District)

4/ Look for similar pages

Pages that similar to http://www.ssischool.org : 27 hits

Pages that linked to http://www.ssischool.org : 3 hits

Pages that similar kids.msfc.nasa.gov : 27 hits

Pages that linked to kids.msfc.nasa.gov : 636 hits

A day in the world’s shoe

There are too many problems in our world that we did not relize, one of them is poverty. Haveyou ever feel how it would be like to live in poverty? On International day 2008, SSIS student participated in many activities and workshop that helped them realized how severe poverty is in the world. I was shock, 45% of the world’s population is living under $2 a day. The Crossroad really amazed me, they spread their voices to everybody about poverty.

First, we were divided in groups, each person had a disability such as: blind, mute, deaf, immoble, can only crawl, one leg… we had to cross the brigde by helping each other. The game taught us that if we are united, all the disability will not be matter.

Lunch time, all the burritos, sandwiches, Pho were gone…I noticed that I am a poor person. Rice and vegetables were the only foods that they have. By looking back, I realized that I am very lucky…there are million people starving out there.

The last activitiy was making bags, we were divided in families. There were 3 sections, each one was 10 minutes and represented 1 week in real life. In that short amount of time, families had to make paper bags and sell it in order to pay for food, rent, school, health care. We were insulted by the shop keeper. Because we couldn’t pay for the rent, my family was moved under the brigde, working hard…

We had fun, enjoyed playing the game…but to them, it is real life, they are working so hard to survive. It is unfair, we have to do something.

It has changed my life. Everyday, I see street kids selling gums, flower, loterry…but I did not know what to do. But right now, I am having a lot of ideas and ways to break the poverty cycle. As you see, at school; we always have fundraising. By telling everyone about this, we could ask for their voices…Because we could never do this alone; if the whole world participate, there will be such thing as poverty.

The Script for Face Project

First, I open the picture of my face on Photoshop.

My face was full of pimples and acne, so I used the “Healing tool” to delete them. After that, I selected the background of the picture using the Magic Wand tool and used the Lasso tool to add the rest of the background to the selection by pressing Shift and clicking the spots that needs to be added. To make my background much more interesting I selected a color, then I press “Backspace”, the background automaticly turned into the color i picked. Then I saved this selection by going to Select+Save Selection and named it “Background.” I repeated this process but clicked Select+Inverse+Select+Save Selection and named it “Head.” I loaded the Channel “Head” by clicking Select+Load Selection. Then I pressed the Alt key and selected the left side of my head. I called it “left” using the same steps that i used to save “Background” and “head”. The next thing I did was I split my face in half so the bad part of my face was going to be covered with a variety of pictures. I used the “Lasso Tool” to draw a wavy line through part of my face, and then 5-6 pieces of puzzles. Once I made the puzzle pieces I put different colors in. To insert the photos into the puzzle pieces, I first selected the piece that the picture would go into, opened the pictures in photoshop, selected the whole picture and pasted it to the puzzle piece. I repeated this process to fill all of the puzzle pieces.

When I finished, I saved the photo as JPEG
